Heart Check Before Sound Check

We spend hours making sure the EQ is perfect, the monitors are balanced, the tracks aresynced, and the transitions are seamless. We want excellence, and we should! But today, Before we plug in a single instrument, we need to talk about the most critical check of all. God is far less interested in the quality of our reverb than He is in the condition of our souls.

In 1Samuel 16:7, God reminds us that while man looks at the outward appearance—or in our case,
the outward performance—the Lord looks at the heart.

The Motive Check (Who Are We Magnifying?)

The Core Question: Are we seeking God’s glory or the spotlight?
The Trap: We can easily start confusing the presence of God with the applause of people.
The Goal: Our character must be rooted in humility. We are signposts pointing to Jesus,
not the main attraction.

The Lifestyle Check (Worship Beyond the Stage)

The Core Question: Does our private life match our public ministry?.
True worship leadership isn’t a Sunday gig; it’s a Monday-to-Saturday lifestyle.
The Reality: If your hands are lifted high on Sunday, but those same hands are clicking on
things they shouldn’t during the week, or tearing people down in anger, there is a mismatch.
The Scripture: Amos 5:23 gives us a terrifying warning from God: “Away with the noise of your
songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.

Our private devotion must always run deeper than our public display.

The Submit-and-Serve Check (The Teachable Spirit)

The Core Question: How do we handle authority, feedback, and serving in obscurity?
You can instantly tell the character of a worship leader by how they react when they aren’t the center of attention.

  • How do you respond when the ministry leader asks you to sit out a week?
  • How do you handle a note from the sound engineer asking you to turn down your amp?
  • Are you willing to help pack up cables and stack chairs when the room empties?
  • A leader with a healthy heart understands Biblical authority and embraces a servant’s
  • posture.

Conclusion

So, before your next rehearsal, before you turn on the tech, take five minutes alone. Run
through the playlist of your heart:

  1. Check your motives: Am I doing this for Him or for me?
  2. Check your lifestyle: Is there unconfessed sin I need to bring to the light?
  3. Check your spirit: Am I teachable and ready to serve?
