Chapter 1: Who is God?

Let’s start by looking at who God is as stated in the Bible. May God open your eyes to see the truth of who He is. Watch this video and read through these verses.

  • I AM – Exodus 3:14, “God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I am has sent me to you.’” (NIV)
  • IMMANUEL – Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (NIV)
  • JEHOVAH – Psalm 83:18, “Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord— that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.” (NIV)
  • KING OF KINGS – 1 Timothy 6:15, “which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords,” (NIV)
  • LIFE – John 14:6, Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (NIV)
  • LIGHT OF THE WORLD – John 8:12, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (NIV)
  • LORD GOD ALMIGHTY – Revelation 15:3, and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb: ‘Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the nations.’” (NIV)
  • LOVE – 1 John 4:8, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (NIV)
  • ALPHA AND OMEGA – Revelation 22:13, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (NIV)
  • FATHER – Matthew 6:9, “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,’” (NIV)
  • COMFORTER – John 14:26, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (NIV)
  • CREATOR – 1 Peter 4:19, “So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.” (NIV)
  • GOOD SHEPHERD – John 10:11, “‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.’” (NIV)
  • PRINCE OF PEACE- Isaiah 9:6, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (NIV)
  • REDEEMER – Job 19:25, “I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.” (NIV)
  • RESURRECTION – John 11:25, “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;’” (NIV)
  • FIRST BORN – Rom 8:29, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” (NIV)
  • HEAD OF THE BODY – Colossians 1:18, “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” (NIV)

These are just a few of the names and verses that show us who God is. Perhaps you have a distorted or incorrect view of your loving Heavenly Father. An incorrect view will lead to issues when worshiping and coming before God. Let’s take the next step and look at worship.

One definition of worship is, “worship is the proper response to who God is, What He has done, continues to do, and will do in the future.”

Worship is focusing on God, placing all attention on Him, looking to Him alone. Having a deep revelation of who God is will put us in a posture of worship. If you think about the Christian life we live, knowing who God is will put everything else we do in perspective. No matter what challenges we face, in health, job, relationships, finances, in good times and even in bad, in all situations, and in everything, if we keep God at the center of our attention our life will be a sweet sacrifice to him.

“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

As we give thanks, we naturally transition to praising God for who He is, what He has done, and what He is going to do. This brings us into His presence, the doorway to living a life of worship that is acceptable to God.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

– Psalm 100:4-5

When we look at the Bible we get a glimpse of who God says He is. Names He has used, that describe His character. In many of these verses you will find more than one character or name of God.

Reflection:

Take some time now to ask God to show you who He is, and repent of ways that you have incorrectly viewed Him.

Questions:

  1. How have you viewed God that does not align to the verses above and how do the verses above help you see God for who He truly is?
  2. What is something you can do daily to remind yourself of who God is?
  3. How can you make time in your day to worship and focus on God only?
  4. What are two things you are thankful for? Consider keeping a journal and write 1-3 things daily that you are thankful for.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

May You help me to place my focus on You and worship You for who You are. Please give me a revelation of who You are. Help me to see things as You see them, align my heart and my vision to Yours. May my life be filled with Your love, as I get to know You as my Heavenly Father more and more. Let my life be one of thankfulness and praise to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
