Worship Fundamentals

Chapter 7: The Difference Maker

Today, we will explore what truly makes a man or woman in ministry anointed and powerful. As worship leaders, we may have debated the significance of a minister’s heart versus their skill. Some argue that the heart is paramount because it is what the Lord sees and honors, while others emphasize the importance of skill in our ministry work. Both perspectives offer compelling arguments.

Some believe that both heart and skill are crucial—skill reflecting the heart’s dedication. What good is a pure heart if it lacks the skill to meet the ministry’s demands? However, both heart and skill, though essential, pale in comparison to a greater revelation from God.

We need both heart and skill. However, focusing solely on these attributes presents a man-centered view of ministry. While these qualities may stabilize our ministry, they are weak compared to what truly brings power to our work.

The Bible is filled with examples of individuals who performed great wonders, earning admiration among believers. Yet, these stories also highlight the insignificance of the tools without the hand that wields them. We have often overlooked the Potter while admiring the clay.

Psalm 51:11 captures David’s understanding of the most valuable aspect of his life: “Do not banish me from Your presence and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.” It wasn’t his crown, ability to worship, righteousness, possessions, or gifts that mattered most—it was the Spirit of God.

Similarly, Moses knew the importance of God’s presence. In Exodus 33:14-16, Moses insists, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.”

The same Spirit empowered the disciples to perform miracles, cast out demons, heal diseases, and proclaim the kingdom of God.

These examples reveal that the true difference maker is the Holy Spirit.

Prayer:

Dear Lord,

I worship You, You are the One I long for and need. May your presence be near to me and never depart, may the sound of your voice guide my life and steps. May I be obedient and do all that you have for me and ask of me.  Please be my comforter in times of discouragement, be the power that surrounds all of my work, be the One to remind me of my call. May You find me faithful. My Lord and my God, to you I pray.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
